Evaluation question 3 - What have you learned from your audience feedback?

We decided to answer question 3 as a group, which was 'what have you learned from your audience feedback?'. Overall, there were a lot of strengths for our music video, however, we found that there are some things that we would change if we was to create another music video due to the feedback we have received as well through the experience of creating the video. For example, we would add a wider range of different locations and leave enough time for us to get to these locations as we didn't do this due the limited amount of time we had to film the video, this was due to the fact we changed our mind with our song choice and had to plan a whole new song in a shorter space of time. Despite some changes we would make, overall, I think that everything went well and there were no major faults.

Evaluation question 4 - How did you use media technologies in the construct, research, planning and evaluation stages?

Music Video Audience Questionnaire

Audience Feedback

Once we completed our final music video we gathered 15 people to watch it and give us positive feedback as well as areas for improvement. In another post I will upload each individual feedback slip, however, now I am going to give an overview of the feedback we received as many of the comments made were very similar.

feedback received:

POSITIVE COMMENTS:
AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT:
Good mise-en-scene (make up etc)
A wider variety of shots
Good use of lighting especially on the lip syncing
More locations
Visual matching with song

Looked professional

Good use of light to portray the theme

Excellent editing

Overall we received more positive comments than negative which is always a good thing, and when looking back over the comments I was very pleased. In addition, I think that the areas for improvements were fair and did make sense. I do think that we could have used a wider variety of shots and could have used more locations. However, we didn't want to over do the amount of shots we used as this could have resulted in the video looking 'cluttered' and could look like there's 'too much happening'. We were also tight for time and were restricted with the different locations we could use due to having no car, and not having easy access to good filming locations so we had to work with what was close to us. We also asked people to give a rating of our music video out of 5 and the average rating given was 4.3. The rating we received was much better than I expected our video to get, and as a group we was very happy with this.

Website Progress

Our website is on its way to be completed. After struggling to get the tour dates on the website we finally did this, by creating a Facebook page and also creating a 'BandsInTown' account to make some of the tour dates and made around 10 in the UK and we are yet to create ones worldwide. We also added to the website the 'PURE HEROINE' album using our own album cover and using Lordes music from the album. We put each individual track at 99p and the whole album at £9.99. doing this makes the website look more professional and official.

Preveiw of CD

This is a draft for our CD insert booklet, back of the CD and the front. We asked around for feedback and it was suggested we don't use lyrics in the insert booklets as we don't have enough time to write all the lyrics on each page, and this would also take up a lot of pages which are not necessary. It has also been advised that we change the colour of the album cover title into a gold kind of colour as well as 'DAKOTA' on the back of the CD. Another suggested improvement was that we should use a different picture instead of the picture of the tennis court as it looks unprofessional. I will keep you updated on the changes that will be made, and hopefully we are able to make all the designs revolving the CD look better!

From this draft we asked around and the following are some improvements we could make to make our video better, which we are going to act upon in the next few days. Here are the both positive and negative feedback we received:

  + Good knowledge of genre
+ Clarity of concept
+ Good quality shots
+ Appropriate mise-en-scene for genre
+ Good editing

- More similar pacing clips at the end as there was in the beginning
- 3.10 cuts a bit out of sync (fixed)
- 0.37 more in time (fixed)

Social Media : Facebook

We have decided to make a Facebook for our artist, this is similar to the Twitter page we created. But I think that more social media sites we more we are able to promote our artist DAKOTA. In Addition, Facebook allows us to do more than Twitter as it allows us to add tour dates and communicate more directly.

with fans.

Tour Dates poster

Dakota by Em Flax
In order to promote when Dakota is going on tour we made this poster and we are going to publish this on our website and on social media.

Website Progress!

We have started to work on our website and we are doing this on the website 'Wix', below are pictures of what we have done so far. We decided to use dark pictures for the background and simple fonts as this is what we are portraying in our video and with our merchandise as well, and doing this continues the theme of the artist. Our website isn't finished yet but this is how far we are at the minuet and there is still a lot of work that needs to be done before we can call it 'finished'.

Merchandise on our website and social media

After we created the merchandise we have posted them on our website, we came across the problem that the merchandise was only shown on male models and tried to find female models on the same website. However, there was none so on our website we stated that the merchandise offered were unisex.
we also updated our social media sites stating that the new merchandise was available to buy.

Filming : day 3

Today was the third day on filming and the location was the school tennis courts. Now all we need to film is the time lapse and this should take us around 10 to 15 minuets to do. We wanted to film at the tennis courts as we wanted to link the footage with the lyrics. One problem we came across was that the actual tennis counts weren't going up until after Easter, however we didn't have time to find an alternative location and we needed to film and finish filming on this location today. So we did film here and we are hoping that it is not noticeable. The essential things we needed were, the tripod, camera, tennis balls ( which we borrowed from PE), we also made sure that Amy wore dark and grungy clothing as this was the look we wanted the artist to portray in the video.

Editing progress

Today when we were editing we came across the problem that the LED light we used while filming appeared in some of the clips we were wishing to use. As we had no other clips to replace this and we had no time to re film the clips we tried to find out how we could cover up the camera and make it un noticeable.
After spending the majority of the lesson looking for a solution
to this, towards the end of the lesson in Adobe Photoshop we found the 'Clone Stamp' tool. We used this to remove the light in the clip without cropping the light out as this would make the specific part of the video look a different ratio to the rest. We also tried to cover the light with a black photo, however, it was too obvious and stood out. The tool works by selecting the part of the clip you wish to duplicate, we selected another part of the black background and copied this over the top of the area we wanted to get rid of.

Social Media : Twitter

In order to promote our artist we decided to make a Twitter page, as Twitter is one of the most used apps and will be the best way to update fans. This allows us to share our website and promote new and up coming music. Twitter also means we can answer any questions fans may have and communicate with them. Below is a picture of our Twitter page:

We've started editing!

Although we haven't finished filming our music video yet we decided to start editing as the dead line is creeping up fast and we want to ensure that we get it finished in time and that the editing is the bets it can be! Starting editing will allow us to see if there are any gaps we need to fill meaning we are able to do this way before the deadline, it will also allow us to film any parts again if they aren't good enough or are wrong, as if we started editing close to the deadline and we found that there was footage we are unable to fix in the editing stage this may be a problem. All we are doing is placing the clips in the correct order according to the story board we followed, we also need to ensure that all the lip syncing matches with the music as this is one of the most important parts as it could look very poor if it didn't match throughout.

Filming : Day Two

So today was the day we filmed in our second location. The locations was in a woods next to a pond. Today we managed to get a wide range of different shots for the video including: mid shots, long shots, close ups, over the shoulder shots, panning shots, and shots took on the shoulder mount. On the day we ensure we had everything we needed like props and most importantly the story board as this told us exactly what shots we required and made the day of filming a lot shorter, as when filming our AS video we wasn't sure on what shots we needed to film on the day which made filming take much longer, and this isn't much fun when the weather is so cold!
here are some pictures from today:

Shooting Schedule 2

here is our shooting scheduled for day two!

Filming : day 1

Today was the first day of filming! And we got a lot more done then i was expecting. Today we completed all the lip syncing parts of the music video as it was essential we did these all at once because if we was to go back to it Amy hair and makeup could change and the difference could be easily noticed. The shots that we did were fairly simple and involved; mid shots and close ups. We also filmed for the video we are going to layer up for part of the music video, this includes a large amount of different videos of Amy on top of each other and faded out.
Here are some pictures of the day of filming:

Risk assessment

This is our first risk assessment for when filming our music video, which will identify any risks that may occur when filming and ensure that we can prevent these risks and cautions of any possible hazards to protect any individuals involved.

The risk assessment has been checked by each participants in our group and has been signed by our teacher which will ensure that all the risks are identified and none have been missed and

un identified.

The Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 is a law which gives creators of literary, dramatic, musical, artistic works, sound recordings, broadcasts films and typographical arrangement of published editions rights to control the ways their material is allowed to be used. We have attempted to contact the artist of the song we're doing.

lighting ideas

As lighting is going to play a significant part of our music video I went on Youtube and looked a various different videos where lighting played a large part in the music video. I found that No Harm by the Editors, uses different lighting which has great significance in the music video.

Change of music video song choice

Myself, Abbie and Amy made the decision to change songs, initially we were using the song 'Take a Walk by Passion Pit'. However the closer we came to begin filming the more problems we had with the song. Firstly, when creating the story board we felt like our ideas for the music video were running out of steam and the initial ideals we had weren't great too either. When looking over the story board and attempting to see the our pictures in real life, we couldn't imagine it to be good content which made less confident about creating the video. Another problem we came across was that the singer for the song 'Take A Walk' was male, and we was having difficulty coming up with a reason for why a female was the lead in the song, as it was inconvenient for us to get a male singer. We also didn't think that our ideas were realistic and achievable for the timescale we have, as our idea for the song was to travel to different locations and get footage, this was proving difficult as to when we were going to do it due to us all having other commitments and not being avalible to travel to locations like Sheffield at the same time.

The song that we have decided to change to is 'Tennis Courts' by Lorde. We felt like this song would be much more suitable as we are able to use suitable locations located closer to use which are more accessible and easy to get to, meaning we are able to film on more occasions. The lead sing is also female, this means we can get someone from our group is able to be the lead singer in our video which means we don't have to find someone out of our group to do it which is much more suitable. We also have a much clearer idea for this song, which will make story boarding it much more easier. here is the song with lyrics:

Final story board - Passion Pit - Take A Walk

Although in the end we didn't end up doing this song, I still think that we have learnt a lot from creating the majority of the story board to this song. As it has gave us better knowledge on how to story board to a high standard, and has been good practice. Here is how far we got with the story board before changing songs:
